Hot picks

This weekend's best bets around here.

Saturday is a three-stop night if you pace it. Cider at the mill, free beer garden on High Street, then Electric 80s fireworks for the Longwood season finale.

Anselma Cider Fest

Chester Springs · Sat Sep 26 · 10–4

Anselma Cider Fest

Fourth-year harvest day on Pickering Creek. Fresh farm cider, milling and bread demos, artisan tables, Blue Belles and the Lenape Brass Band. Kids get first-responder vehicles. The 1747 mill doing fall the right way.

Uptown Oktoberfest beer garden

West Chester · Sat Sep 26 · 5pm · free

Uptown Oktoberfest beer garden

High Street patio hour outside Uptown! Knauer PAC. Lawn games, drinks, JD Malone live. No ticket for the garden. Bye Bye Birdie is inside after if you want the full night. I'm weak for free patio energy before a show.

Longwood Electric 80s fireworks

Kennett Square · Sat Sep 26 · 8:15pm

Longwood Electric 80s fireworks

Last Fireworks & Fountains night of 2026. Neon 80s over the Main Fountain Garden. Jazz Age warm-up in the Beer Garden 5–7:45 if you want the long version. Rain delay is Sunday same time. Season finale. Dress like you remember MTV.

Field guide

One useful guide to living around here.

Brandywine Valley · Chester County

Early leaf-peep scout

Peak is still roughly the third week of October around here. That does not mean you sit inside until then. This weekend is first real color-check season: lake reflections at Marsh Creek, the River Trail behind the Brandywine Museum, Peirce's Woods at Longwood if you already have a ticket, French Creek's Hopewell Lake loop if you want a longer drive and bigger canopy.

I treat early peeping like a scout run. Short loops. Golden hour if you can steal it. Hunting season is already live in parts of the county parks, so bright colors on you and a quick check of the park hunt calendar before you wander off-trail. Full map of what/where/why, plus when to bother vs wait, is in the longer guide.

What's building

What's going up, getting paused, or getting fought over.

One township just bought nearly a hundred acres for forever parkland. Another has a Monday night conditional-use fight on church land.

Herdeg open space

Pennsbury · Chadds Ford gravity

Herdeg open space: $6.75M / 98 acres

Supervisors voted 3–0 on Sep 16 to buy ~98 Herdeg-family acres. Total $6.75M. Township share about $1.87M. Rest is county + federal Land and Water Conservation Fund grants. Most of it sits next to the township park. Settlement by mid-December. This is the good kind of "what's building": nothing, forever.

Makers

Local makers nights and market tables worth hitting.

Craft tables in two directions this weekend. County park fest Saturday, Kerr Park arts fest Sunday. I'm hitting at least one.

Warwick Fall Fest

Warwick County Park · Sat Sep 26 · 11–4

Warwick Fall Fest

Free admission and parking. Craft vendors, food trucks, pumpkin painting, wagon rides, highland cow and pony rides. Bubbletopia if you need that kind of chaos. North-county fall day done right.

Warwick Fall Fest

Fall Arts Fest

Downingtown · Kerr Park · Sun Sep 27 · 12–3

Fall Arts Fest

Vendors, art, free pumpkins, kids stuff, food trucks. Benefits Chester County Mural & Arts Project. Gazebo energy at Kerr Park. Easy Sunday if Saturday ate you alive.

Deep cut

One local history leftover worth knowing.

Newlin / West Bradford / Embreeville · 1199 Cannery Road

ChesLen Preserve

Most people drive past Cannery Road thinking "big park." It is bigger than that. ChesLen holds rare Unionville serpentine barrens that starved old farms, the Mason-Dixon Star Gazers' Stone that helped settle a bloody border fight, and a remnant Chester County Poorhouse cemetery from the 1798 Embreeville lineage.

I care because this is not decorative history. Bad soil became rare habitat. A surveyor's reference point became a quiet walk. A place built for orphans and the indigent left a cemetery you can still pass on a trail. Lenfest gift plus county land plus later acres equals 1,282 free acres of West Branch Brandywine wild, closed Thursdays, open dawn to dusk the rest of the week.

Go for the overlooks. Stay for the three stories under your boots. Full pin notes in the longer cut.

Season

What's in the air right now. Farm stands, orchards, peak harvest.

Pumpkin weekends flip on. Chester Springs Saturday and Sunday, Malvern's patch starts Sunday. Grab a wagon before the October crush.

Milky Way Farm pumpkin harvest

Chester Springs · Sat–Sun Sep 26–27 · 10–5

Milky Way Farm pumpkin harvest opens

Dairy farm flips the switch. $5 admission covers corn maze, animals, meadow walk to the patch. Optional $5 hayride. Creamery ice cream runs late. First hayride-to-the-patch weekend of the season. I'm weak for opening weekend energy.

Sugartown Strawberries pumpkin patch

Malvern / Willistown · Sun Sep 27 · 10–4:45

Sugartown Strawberries pumpkin patch

U-pick weekends start Sunday on Sugartown Road. Tractor hayride out to the patches, or grab pre-picked gourds up front and hit the Country Store. Willistown fall mode without the carnival volume.
